At LEAF, the Answer Keeps Showing Up in Unexpected Places
It happened at the Pride celebration, where a simple table of repurposed hula hoops and t-shirts became something no one quite planned for. People stopped. They sat down. And one by one, youngsters, teens, elders, strangers, all picked up a strip of fabric and started weaving.
The project was LEAF’s community weaving booth, and the materials were about as humble as it gets: salvaged t-shirts cut into strips, old hula hoops reborn as looms. But something about the act of weaving , the rhythm of it, the way it asks nothing of you except your hands and a few minutes of your time, turned a booth into a gathering place. By the end of the day, the hoops were rich with color and texture, each one holding the contributions of dozens of hands.
Those weavings have since come home to LEAF, where they’re being finished and will be on display. So if you added a strand of color at Pride this summer, your work is here. woven into something larger, alongside everyone else who stopped and sat down for a few minutes.
